The matchup
“They don’t make them like they used to” is a testable claim, and ThinkPads are the best test bench in computing. The X220 is the fan-canonized high-water mark: 2011’s 12.5-inch brick with the last great seven-row keyboard and a parts diagram that reads like a promise. The T14 Gen 5 is the interesting counterfactual — the generation where Lenovo, after years of soldering everything down and getting publicly flogged for it, put the sockets back.
Where the classic wins
The keyboard, obviously; nobody disputes this, including Lenovo. But the deeper win is architectural. The X220 treats every major component as a field replaceable unit: RAM in sockets, a 2.5-inch drive bay, mSATA and Mini PCIe slots, an external battery that swaps in five seconds, and a keyboard that comes out with three screws. Hardware maintenance manuals were published, parts flooded the corporate off-lease market, and a fourteen-year-old unit is still economically repairable today — which is why people still run them. Longevity track record is the one score no new machine can buy: the X220 has fourteen documented years of survival; the T14 Gen 5 has a warranty.
Where the modern wins
Everywhere the calendar matters. The X220’s Sandy Bridge silicon caps out in ways no fondness can fix: it struggles with modern video calls, its TN panel was mediocre in 2011, official Windows support has ended, and every passing year makes “usable” require more asterisks. The T14 Gen 5, meanwhile, is a genuinely repairable modern machine — two SO-DIMM sockets (up to 96 GB), a standard M.2 drive, a modular port board, published service manuals, and an iFixit repairability collaboration Lenovo actually advertises. It’s faster in every dimension, runs cool, and will receive firmware and OS support into the 2030s. The classic can’t compete on any of that; it can only be admired.
What the scoreboard says
On build quality (25) the X220 still scores well — magnesium roll cage, no flex — but the T14 matches it with better hinges and a decade of materials progress. Longevity track record (20) goes to the X220 on evidence; the T14 gets a conservative score because time hasn’t voted yet. Repairability (20) is nearly a tie, which is the whole story: the modern machine deliberately climbed back toward the classic’s standard. Parts availability (10) favors the X220 today but will favor the T14 by 2030. Value (15) and satisfaction (10) split on use case — the X220 is a $120 hobby machine with heirloom charm, the T14 a $1,400 tool you’ll run for a decade. Buy the modern one. Thank the old one for making it possible.

The X220 wins the philosophy war and the T14 Gen 5 wins the purchase decision. If you need a daily driver, buy the modern machine — it's the rare current laptop that took the classic's lessons to heart. Keep the X220 for what it is: proof that the industry knew how to do this all along.
