Why it’s here

Klein has been forging pliers since 1857, when Mathias Klein repaired a telegraph lineman’s broken side-cutters and decided he could make a better pair from scratch. The D213-9NE is the modern descendant of that repair job: US-forged alloy steel, induction-hardened knives, and a hot-riveted joint that professional electricians operate hundreds of times a day, every day, until they retire. In union apprenticeships these are less a purchase than a rite of passage.

The story

The founding anecdote is almost too on-brand for this site: a lineman walked into a Chicago forge in 1857 with half a pair of broken pliers, Mathias Klein forged him a new half and riveted it on, and when the other half broke later, the lineman came back and Klein completed the first all-Klein pair. The company grew with the telegraph, then the telephone, then the grid — by the early 1900s “Kleins” had become the generic trade word for lineman’s pliers, and it still is.

Five generations of the same family later, the company still forges in America — six plants and over $200 million invested in domestic production — while most competitors moved offshore. The high-leverage D213 pattern, with its rivet set close to the cutting edge for roughly 46% more cutting power, is the current edition of a tool that has been converging on its final form for a century and a half.

Durability report

The failure mode analysis is brief. The forged body does not break under any load human hands can generate. The joint is factory-set and stays set — a loose pair of Kleins is almost always a counterfeit or a horror story involving a cheater bar. The knives hold their edge through years of copper and will only notch if you cut hardened steel, which the manual, the apprentice-master, and now this review all told you not to do.

What actually ends a D213’s service life, decades in: the plastic grip dip hardens and cracks (replaceable), the polish wears to a working grey (cosmetic), and the owner retires (unrelated). Multi-decade professional examples are the norm, not the exception — which for a tool used as a plier, cutter, hammer, and occasional pry bar is the strongest kind of evidence.

Repair & parts reality

Like most forged tools, the honest answer is that there is little to repair and no parts catalog. The rivet is permanent by design; the knives can be dressed with a stone but not replaced; grip dips are a cheap standard consumable. Klein’s lifetime warranty against material and workmanship defects is honored with little friction — though in practice warranty claims are rare enough that most electricians have never filed one.

The long-term math

Forty-five dollars for a tool that routinely serves a full 30-to-40-year career works out to about a dollar a year, billed once. The used market agrees: worn Kleins sell readily, because everyone knows the wear is cosmetic. Among the tools on this scoreboard only the Estwing scores higher, and it took deleting the moving parts entirely to do it.
