Irwin Vise-Grip 10WR

A 100-year-old Nebraska invention that still works fine — though 'fine' is doing quieter work than it did before 2008.

Why it’s here

The locking plier was invented in 1924 by William Petersen, a Danish blacksmith in DeWitt, Nebraska, and for the better part of a century Vise-Grips were forged in that one small town. The design is a genuine piece of American tool canon: an over-center toggle that clamps with tons of force and releases with a lever. In 2008, new owner Irwin closed DeWitt and moved production to China — which makes the 10WR this site’s cleanest natural experiment in what happens to a classic when the factory changes and the blueprint doesn’t.

The story

Petersen’s first patent (1921) used a screw to lock the jaws; the 1924 version added the over-center locking action, and farmers around DeWitt bought them out of the blacksmith’s Model T as fast as he could forge them. The Petersen Manufacturing Company put its first real factory in a former drugstore in 1938, ran at full capacity through the war years supplying aircraft plants, and added the modern easy-release trigger in 1957. At its peak the plant employed several hundred people in a town of about six hundred.

Then came the acquisitions — American Tool in 1985, Irwin into the family in 1993, Newell Rubbermaid over it all in 2002 — and in 2008 the DeWitt plant closed, ending 80 years of American production. The epilogue is remarkable: in 2018 toolmaker Malco reopened the same factory with former Vise-Grip hands to forge Eagle Grip locking pliers. The town, at least, refused to be discontinued.

Durability report

The design remains close to unkillable: the geometry does the work, and geometry doesn’t rust. But the current production’s track record is measurably noisier than the legend’s. Owner reports since 2008 include jaw teeth that deform on hardened fasteners where DeWitt-era teeth bit clean, rivets with play from the card, and adjusting screws with gritty threads. Plenty of post-2008 pairs also serve for years without complaint — the problem is variance, and variance is itself a durability defect. Meanwhile fifty-year-old DeWitt originals remain common in working toolboxes, which is both the best advertisement for the design and the quiet indictment of its current stewardship.

Repair & parts reality

The mechanism is refreshingly transparent — screw, toggle, lever, spring — and the spring is about the only part you can realistically replace. Joints are riveted, jaws are integral, and Irwin runs no parts program. The saving grace of the simplicity is diagnostic: nothing hides. When a Vise-Grip is bad, you can see it in the store; inspect before buying, a sentence we never had to write about the Nebraska ones.

The long-term math

Fifteen dollars for a tool that plausibly serves a decade or two of occasional rescue work is still honest value — about a dollar a year to be the person who can remove a rounded bolt. But the 10WR carries the widest gap on this scoreboard between design and execution: the same drawing, built in DeWitt, would be scoring in the high 80s. What we can rate today is a good tool wearing a great tool’s name.

Watch out

Post-2008 Chinese production shows real QC variance — softer jaw teeth and looser rivets turn up. If you find a DeWitt-stamped original at a garage sale, buy it; that one's the legend.
